Summer Sailing Program 2013
June 24th - August 2nd (4th of July excluded)
Open to all juniors age 8 to 18
Lasers, CFJs and Sabots - plus O’Pen BICs!

The Junior Sailing Program at Silver Gate Yacht Club [“SGYC JS”] is supported by the Silver Gate Yacht Club Foundation, a 501-C3 non-profit organization intended to sponsor non-profit and charitable events at the club. SGYC JS provides a full-day summer program of sailing instruction and fun for students from 8 to 18 years of age [“Juniors”], along with the opportunity for interested students to participate in sailing activities at SGYC year-round.
The planning for this year’s Summer Program is well underway. We have a fleet of Lasers, Club Flying Juniors (CFJs) and Sabots, as well as the exciting new O’Pen BIC boats (we are the only program in San Diego to offer the O’Pen BICs!). Once trained, the Juniors will also have the opportunity to sail a full-size Catalina 22 sloop. This year’s Summer Program promises to be an exciting, fun and fulfilling experience for all Juniors interested in sailing – and who isn't interested in sailing in a gorgeous place like America’s Finest City!

DATES: Our Summer Program begins on June 24th and runs until August 2nd, Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 4:00pm, with the exception of July 4th. Juniors can participate in any or all of the classes and will be assured of receiving instruction from certified sailing instructors in basic, intermediate and advanced sailing skills, navigation and seamanship. Session 4 will offer an optional race training component in preparation for the Dutch Shoe Regatta on July 19th and the Luff-In on July 20th/21st.
Juniors will receive classroom and on-water instruction and a one-hour lunch break. SGYC JS will provide a free BBQ lunch on Fridays, but Juniors should bring their own lunch and beverages on other days. Participation in Junior racing activities in San Diego Bay is encouraged for students who wish to explore the competitive side of sailing. Boats and crew berths will be assigned to students by the instructors in accordance with their skill level and expressed interest.
COST: The cost of our program is extremely competitive in the San Diego market. Cost per week is $230 for SGYC members and $250 for non-members plus a one-time per season non-refundable registration fee of $30 per student. A SGYC JS T-shirt is included in the registration fee. This program is open to all juniors regardless of SGYC membership
CLOTHING: Each Junior should bring two sets of clothing consisting of a T-shirt, shorts or jeans, socks, light windbreaker, change of underwear and rubber-soled shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). Rubber soled diving shoes are best for sailing. Bathing suits are acceptable in addition to the above items. All clothes must be in a labeled gym bag or backpack. Juniors are encouraged to supply their own life jackets (PFD).
HEALTH AND SAFETY: Each student must provide a completed medical consent form. Additionally, each student is required to complete a 50-yard swim test and be able to tread water for 3 minutes with a lifejacket. All on-water activities in which Juniors participate will be accompanied by several “chase boats” for added safety.
TRANSPORTATION: Parents of Juniors must provide transportation to and from SGYC. Ample public parking is available on Shelter Island Drive across from the club. Juniors are expected to leave the premises by 4:00pm. No after hours supervision will be provided. Juniors under the age of 16 must be met by their parents on SGYC property.
We look forward to seeing you this summer!!
